Impossible Things

I read this this morning and was encouraged how God uses ordinary people to do what seems impossible.  I love how God will use anything that will bring Him Glory.

prayerphoto_pt_1God does use the ordinary to do the impossible. He takes our hesitant “except” and uses it for His extraordinary purpose for our good and His Glory. “Lord, I have nothing except…it’s very little, but you are in the business of the impossible.”

Is anything too hard for the Lord? The simple answer is NO!

…Many times in Scripture we are reminded that God does not do things our way…An eighty-year-old to lead a million moaning people to a better land! A prostitute in the royal line of Jesus! An adulterous murderer who became a man after God’s own heart! …God is the God of the unexpected and impossible. At times as I have desperately “gathered the jugs and bowls” I wondered if God’s anointing oil could possibly fill this jar of clay. Personal experience has taught me that His Word is true and faithful.

During two weeks of non-stop prayer at Hutt City (Crossroads) three seven-year-old girls approached Sheryn Adamson. Amber, one of the girls, told Sheryn the mother of her friend did not want her to go to Kids’ Club anymore. Amber prompted her friend to explain the situation. “My mum doesn’t like God,” E told Sheryn. It was the same with the young girl’s Nana. “If you bring a bible into my house I’ll throw it in the rubbish,” she had informed her little granddaughter. A short time later Sheryn saw them on their knees – one had her hands clasped, all with heads bowed, obviously fervently praying their little hearts out!

Next week the three little friends rushed up to Sheryn, “It’s worked! It’s worked! E’s mum is getting to like God. E saw her reading a Bible, then she closed her eyes and was praying. She’s going to let E come to Kids’ Club – it worked – it worked!”

A few weeks later I was invited to speak at the launch of Miramar’s 24-7 Prayer. Because children were present I told the story of the girl at Hutt City. I asked if there as a seven-year-old girl present and one child timely raised her hand. During the week I visited Miramar again and in their Prayer Room was shown the prayer wall. On it was scrawled in childish handwriting: Please God let F’s mummy let her go to Tuesday JAM and church. (JAM stands for Jesus and Me.) I was told that F’s family is Muslim.

Sometimes I believe as many as six impossible things before breakfast. Now there’s a challenge for our quite time with God. It could radically change our prayer life, our church, our community and even our nation.

Excerpt taken from chapter 10 of White Cloud Soaring by Judith Bennett: the story of how eighteen months of 24-7 Prayer has transformed the Salvation Army in New Zealand.

Plans

leatheretteYesterday I was working on scanning my journals into an electronic format in yet another effort to cut down on the amount of stuff we have. I thought it would be nice to have the availability of what I wrote over the years at my fingertips on the computer. As I was scanning these I was also reading my email and Facebook wall and one of my friends posted a link to the Listener’s Audio Bible with Max McLean – Listen to Today’s Proverb. Yesterday was the 16th, so the Proverb for the day was Proverbs 16 and as I pressed play to listen to it I also turned the page in my journal to scan the next page and it was about Proverbs 16 and Plans. So I reviewed what God was telling me back in June of 2005 and it was awesome how God used what I wrote 4 years ago, a Facebook post and listening to his Word to encourage me as we get closer to completing the plans that we started almost one year ago when we completed our initial training with Wycliffe.

Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. (Proverbs 16:3 NIV)

In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps. (Proverbs 16:9 NIV)

Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails. (Proverbs 19:21 NIV)

My prayer 4 years ago and today is that I will continue to give my plans to the LORD and that I will allow him to determine my steps in his time and not mine.

Fun with kittens

The boys have really started having fun with the kittens, and the kittens also seem to enjoy their new home. The boys were able to get some toys for their new friends along with some other toys but the kittens favorite toy is a rolled up piece of aluminum foil, I’m sure if we had a big cardboard box the boys and the kittens would have their two favorite toys. The boys are learning what the word gentle means if they don’t want the cats to run and hide under the bed. They also thought it was their job to be the disciplinarians and they took turns spraying the cat with the water bottle; patches was very wet and the boys thought it was funny until mommy and daddy took away the bottle and made them spend some time away from the kittens. We’ve only had a few scratches but that doesn’t stop the boys from wanting to share their toys with the kitten. Patches enjoys walking through the hot wheels ramp as long as there are no cars on it.

Furry friends

CatCrossingSignPapa asked the boys Sunday night if they would like to have some kittens. They said, without blinking, YES! Who wouldn’t want a stuffed animal that plays with you and runs and hides and also an additional critter to blame things on when something in the house breaks or someone has a new scratch on their face, arm or foot? Well Jonah wanted to go with Papa to pick them up and they also took mommy for her expertise with all things cats. So after they had the food, litter, and litter box they went and picked up the two new kittens that are currently called Patches and Chester, those names are still up in the air and will probably be changed once everyone agrees on a new name. My suggestion was Michael and Jackson, or cat1 and cat2. They were up early this morning and had fun trying to knock over the plants and were able to get one of the lamps knocked off the table, I was able to catch it the first time they tried. The house might be child, toddler and adult proof but it still needs some work to be kitten proof.

VBS

It was a great week at Vacation Bible School for the boys at Swatara Church of God. We made it to PA from MO with 45 minutes to spare before the first night started. Our kids had a blast and they learned several new songs, had fun learning about Gideon, Shadrack, Meshack, Abednego, and many more and they made some new friends. They were all going to share the new songs with the congregation on Sunday morning. I was only able to record the first few seconds of the first song because Jonah looked like he was going to burst into tears at any second and I didn’t think it would be very kind of me to keep it rolling why he was crying, plus they might take away my World’s Greatest Dad T-shirt. He finally ran to his Papa who grabbed him from the front row and then he wanted his mommy. He shared with mommy in the bathroom that everyone was looking at him and he didn’t like that. They learned this week that God is unpredictable when they were learning about Gideon. So are 4 year olds on a stage in front of lots of people, the rest of the children did a great job singing the remaining songs.

  • A place to live in France
  • Acceptance through Campus France
  • Getting all the required transcripts

Hide-and-seek

Today I took the boys to Hoffer Park to play on the wooden castle; this is by far one of my favorite parks in Middletown PA and makes a great place for playing hide-and-seek. Joshua and I started playing while Jonah tried to see how much sand he could fit in his shoes with his feet still in them; since he was somewhat sweaty he was able to get the soft sand to fuse to his feet that were hypothetical being protected by his blue and gray striped socks. We made some new friends who asked me if I had to walk to the park, because they had to walk super far to get there from the daycare that was really far away. They turned out to be super spies that were pointing me in the direction of the hider making it difficult for Joshua to find a place to hide, but once they joined our game of hide-and-seek I no longer received any tips. Jonah has not mastered the art of being silent while hiding, or at least to not sing a song while hiding, he was normally the first one to be found. My rule for the day was that when you counted to 50 while everyone hid if had to be in French and one of the girls from the daycare said she could do it in Spanish so we had a tri-lingual game of hide-go-seek in the wooden castle by the river today.

On the road again

We are now living in Harrisburg.  The drive from Missouri to Pennsylvania was very calm and quiet and I think that was because we were driving both vehicles and we were able to separate the boys for the majority of the trip, unless it was movie time then we just heard the sound of the movie.

I’m not really sure what the maximum weight that our minivan can hall but I’m pretty sure we were within a few pounds of exceeding it on our way to the keystone state in the silver bullet. I noticed once the van was unloaded we once again had some clearance between the rear tires and the van. I learned on this trip the art of attaching luggage to the roof rack, but I was not able to get our square suitcases into an aerodynamic pattern which caused the van to shake when we were too close to the semi trailers, and also seemed to not help the gas millage. I also couldn’t get a straight answer out of the hotel clerk if this was a safe neighborhood or if I should unload the roof rack. She recommended I not leave anything in the car. It is much easier to get it down then put it up and attach it and I didn’t break a sweat getting it down.

1_600px-Pennsylvania_Turnpike_logo.svgFor those who have not driven the Pennsylvania turnpike there seems to be some confusion over two competing signs. One sign states that the speed limit is 65 MPH and the other sign states that you are driving on Interstate 76. I noticed that going 65 MPH would cause you to get run off the road and I’m not sure if my sign language is still accurate but I don’t think all the hand gestures were very loving. I’ve also heard from more than one person that the state police don’t buy the story that I thought the speed limit was 76 MPH. Missouri has simplified this on Interstate 70 and just made the speed limit 70 MPH, so my suggestion to PA would be to follow suit and change the speed limit to 76 MPH since everyone passed me doing at least 76 MPH.

Pass it on

My wife and I are huge Dave Ramsey fans, the Christian financial counselor, he helped us to get on track with our finances, get out of debt, improve the communication between me and DeAnna, stick to a written budget and so much more that we wanted to share this with all our friends.

dave_ramsey_freedom_screm_Mel-Gibson---BraveheartSome of our closest friends saw the excitement we had as we worked for 15 months to pay off all our debts and they were curious about what all the excitement was about so we were more than happy to share what we were doing with them. They thought it seemed like a great plan so they began sharing it as well. They had shared with some family who also got excited about the idea of having no debt and began reading Ramsey’s book and getting on the plan. My friend’s sister had a friend visit them one afternoon and he saw the book, The Total Money Makeover, lying there and he picked it up and read all the Scripture that Dave Ramsey shares in his book. He felt that he needed to also get control of his finances and debt. This friend is a pastor who felt there were Biblical lessons that he needed to share with his church about getting out of debt and having control of your finances. He took the information back to his church, several states away and currently there are 30 couples that have started the Financial Peace University program at that church with over a million dollars of unsecured debt between them and they are working on getting out of debt and no longer being a servant to the lender (Proverbs 22:7).

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)

But more important than our earthly finances is our eternal salvation. There are still over 200 million people who have yet to hear, read or see any of the God-breathed scripture that can save them. We are excited to see how God’s Word spreads and changes people’s lives and if you would like more information on either Dave Ramsey or how you can partner with us to get God’s Word to those who are still waiting please contact me and I would be happy to share with you.

Water Gun Battle

Tonight after dinner and all the dishes were washed the boys, including daddy, went outside to test our ability at staying dry while chasing each other with a water gun. Since this was not my first time at playing with water everyone put on their swimming suits and then daddy filled up the water guns. Their first mission, that they choose to accept, was to see if they could get daddy’s t-shirt wet. They accomplished this mission after the first refill of water while I was loading their guns they decided to take advantage of the situation and overpower me with their commanding fifty cent florescent green soaker gun that leaks out the top when it’s fired.

water-gunMaw Maw came outside and asked the boys to pose for a picture, as they posed for the picture she shot them with her camera that was actually a water gun that shoots water when you pretend to take a picture. I don’t think she was prepared for Joshua’s quick thinking of firing back with the cup full of water that he was using to fill up his water gun. She was no longer an unarmed civilian; she had entered the conflict and according to the Geneva Convention Rules of Water Gun Fights she was now a lawful combatant and would have to pay with having her clothes drenched. She then let the boys try to take her picture with the camera, but this was a trick camera that allows you to turn the direction of the nozzle so when they pushed the button it sprayed them in the face. I’m sure they are going to be a little camera shy for the next few days, but the war is not over and there will be another water gun battle in the next few days.
