Cameroon National Day

Facebook is a blessing and curse all rolled into one.  As I look and read posts about the Cameroon National Day on May 20th, I play memories in my mind from our life and times in Cameroon.  We’re still adjusting to our lives and times here in the USA.  You can read more on adjustment in a previous post.

I’ve been reflecting more lately about how I “fit” here.  There is part of me that wants to just hide away because I can blend, however, there is another side of me that wants to scream out that I’ve lived this whole other life in a foreign land that I grieve.  You know how everything is always more pleasant the longer you’ve been removed – well, I’m even missing conversations in French.  (I never thought those thoughts or words would come from me).  I purchased a purse in Cameroon from a widow group.  These women make and sell fabric items to support themselves.  I love the purse.  It’s Cameroon fabric, has tons of inner pockets which I love because those who know me know I love everything in it’s own place and it’s my own little piece of Cameroon that I outwardly carry.  I’ve received many compliments and have been asked where to purchase a purse like it.  Sadly, my purse is starting to fray.  I should only look at the positive side of it that I’ve carried it on three continents and it’s held up so well, but I’m sad that I’ll need to find a different purse to carry – I won’t have this outward piece of Cameroon hanging from my shoulder.

Another area is cocoa powder.  The cocoa powder in Cameroon is heavenly – dark, wonderful and aromatic.  Joshua asked me to make a chocolate with frosting from scratch for a school event.  I did and I had to get the last bag of the Cameroon cocoa powder out of the freezer to make it.  I’m thankful I brought enjoy back to last a year, however, sad that this is my last bag and another step further away from Cameroon.

Cocoa Powder

On a completely different note, daily life was harder in Cameroon, however, I’m thankful for making everything from scratch so the boys could experience that.  It tickles me that they will request food I made there from my own substitutes and want it like I made in Cameroon.  It tickles me they request chocolate cake and frosting from scratch.  It tickles me they will request my homemade mac & cheese and don’t like the box kind.  Just those little things that are slivers of silver shining through.

May 21st

May 21st is a significant date for us.  It’s our anniversary for both our wedding and our acceptance into Wycliffe.  We became Wycliffe Bible Translators members on May 21, 2008 – wow!, it’s been 8 years since we started this journey.

Hack On IT

What does hack on IT even mean? Is the last word pronounced /it/ or /I-T/? We accepted both pronunciations. Hack on IT was an event a few weeks ago in Orlando that I was able to attend that is helping to engage technologists in the work of Bible Translation.

Wycliffe Bible Translators currently has openings for over 200 technologists from analysts to web developers, network admins to Linux gurus to software engineers and every type in-between and this event was to bring those who are interested in using their talents and abilities to help advance Bible Translation mixed together with just the right amount of caffeine.  We also had bottles of water for those who had reached their daily caffeine allowance to stay hydrated. We also ate plenty of beef jerky and starbursts.

There are hackathons, which are typically an event lasting several days, in which a large number of people meet to engage in collaborative computer programming. Wycliffe recently did this during Urbana where they worked on the Rapid Translation Toolkit, for more information on all the different projects that were done during this event check out #hack4missions.

This event was not a hackathon it was a Hack on IT. So we started the event with boxes of computer parts and we were tasked with getting the computers to function. It wouldn’t have been any fun if they hadn’t switched the language to Burmese; it’s a nice non Roman script language that makes it challenging to figure out what the different menus say. So, we got to “hack” on some old computer equipment. The goal was to show some of the challenges that a field technician might face in the field trying to get a computer to work. If you notice the first item I grabbed was the role of duct tape! This was not my first time around gently used  computer parts.

Slack for iOS Upload

The following morning we were able to participate in a Scripture Celebration.

After the Scripture Celebration we were able to see some of the new technology that one of our partners, Faith Comes by Hearing is doing with the Digital Bible Platform. They are working to make the Bible available everywhere, for everyone. If you think Amazon using drones to deliver packages is cutting edge, these guys are even more cutting edge launching satellites to deliver scripture.

We were able to hear some testimonies of current IT (Information Technology) staff working in Orlando and how God has moved in their lives to bring them to Wycliffe.  God is so good, and it was a joy to hear all of these stories!

The next day we had two projects that we were working on. The first project was looking at providing a simple solution for network connectivity to many of the remote offices around the world, it needed to be affordable, easy to configure and reliable. The second project was looking at an automated system that would ensure that the Wycliffe.org website did not have any bad links since the majority of the content is dynamically generated. Sorry if I lost you in the geek talk but the event was a blessing for me to connect with the other IT recruiter and meet some new individuals looking to serve with Wycliffe!

He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.” Matthew 9:37-38 NLT

I hope that you will join us in prayer. Also, let me know if you would be interested in going to the next event that we have like this!

Scripture Celebration

When I (David) was in Orlando a few weeks ago part of my time there was spent joining in a scripture celebration.  There were 25 languages that we were celebrating that either received an entire Bible, a New Testament or a portions of scripture that had recently been printed within the last 6 months.

The number of people that speak these 25 languages, that now have access to God’s Word, some of them for the first time is 2,850,850 people!

2,850,850 people now have access

2,850,850 people now have access to the Word of God in their heart language

We were able to hear several stories about the translation projects and one of them was the Makaa, you might remember this language from August 2014 when they finished this translation in Cameroon and they were sending the final copies to the printer. Even though we are not in Cameroon I was still able to celebrate the dedication of the Makaa New Testament along with 24 other portions of scripture including a waterproof Bible for the Kamano-Kafe which is spoken in Papua New Guinea.

The House

As you may have heard or read in our last blog post, we purchased a home.  You may be wondering how or why!?!

The how – it’s expensive to buy a home and you may be thinking why are we asking for additional financial partners if we can purchase a home – no, our financial ministry budget isn’t met and no we don’t have the funds to buy a home, however, the Lord opened the doors with the low interest rates, David is a veteran so we used the VA loan which meant no money down and no PMI.  We crunched numbers and began looking at homes in Pleasant Hill.  The doors to several homes were being slammed shut – multiple offers, needed major repairs, next door to a not so desirable place, etc…  We we thinking we should stop looking.  There was a home that had been on the market for 152 days, it didn’t have the most appealing pictures online (usually the online pictures are better than what a place looks like in person) and the price was higher than we could afford for a mortgage payment.  We ended up looking at it.  The home was painted in all pastel colors – purple, lavender, mint, country blue, etc…  Other than being a pastel palace and needing sweat equity, it was in great shape.  After a weekend of prayer, we decided to make an offer significantly less than the asking price.  The seller’s agent didn’t think we had a chance because the homeowner’s refused all other offers that were much higher than our offer.  The next day we had the answer that the seller’s accepted our offer.  What!?!  We bought a house!  It was exciting, nerve racking and shocking all rolled into one.  The inspections went great and we began fantasizing about the paint color.  We had money from our tax return to make the earnest deposit and pay for paint.  The open doors didn’t stop there.  At closing the title company told us that they owed us money.  What!?!  We’ve purchased homes before and we’ve always had to pay something – this time we received money back.  When we went to Home Depot to purchase the paint for the interior of the home, that day only and at that specific Home Depot, they had a paint sale.  We saved $120 plus we received money off because the Home Depot registers were glitching that day and it took about 30 minutes to check out and we didn’t complain and were thanked with a percentage off our total.

The why – as we began processing working from home remotely and continuing as missionaries with Wycliffe only in the USA, we realized we would be staying put for an extended amount of time.  We felt it made more financial sense in the long run to purchase a home and build some equity.  It has already helped the boys not be so anxious about being root less.  Plus our rent was going to be increased, so it was the right time to look (end of school year, before the rent increases, etc…)

After we finish the painting and minor repairs, I’ll post before and after pictures.  Thank you for your encouragement and support!

UPDATE:  I just have to share this update.  This morning I was painting and I needed to unplug a router that has puzzled us.  There is a line of sight antenna on the roof and this router in a bedroom.  We left it alone and thought we would investigate it more at a later time.  I needed to remove the switch plate and left it unplugged.  About 30 minutes to an hour later there was a work truck that pulled up in front of the house and a man came to the door.  He asked if our power was out.  I replied, “no.”  He was confused why the internet was down.  I was confused by the conversation.  Long story short, he was a technician for a local internet provider and the previous owners allowed the company to install the antenna on the roof and the router in the bedroom and in exchange the company provides us internet for free.  He set us up and of course, plugged his equipment back in.  We were just talking about what internet provider we were going to look into for the house and now we know – it’s taken care!

Ships in the Night

The month of April has been very busy with big things and a blur.  We kicked the month off with Jonah’s birthday and our oldest nephew’s birthday.

The 100% in 100 days campaign ended on April 9th.

We closed on a house on April 11th.

DeAnna traveled to Orlando for meetings for her future role within Wycliffe in the USA April 16th-21st.

David traveled to Austin, TX for a friend’s wedding April 22nd – 25th.

David traveled to Orlando for an IT event and Scripture dedication April 27th – 30th.

In between all the traveling we’ve been working on painting and making minor repairs to the home we closed on so we can move out of our rental soon.  David and I feel like ships passing in the night.

Orlando

I (DeAnna) spent one week in Orlando for a meeting in help to understand my future role better.  It was the first time I left the boys and David had the boys by himself for more than a few hours.  They did better than I did – I was homesick, however, they plugged along well.

The time in Orlando was great in helping me understand and see how all the departmental puzzle pieces fit together and how I can help new members navigate the waters.  It helped me to understand more clearly how vital my role will be.  There are roughly 50 people who are working within Wycliffe as either a Launch Coordinator (that’s what I’ll be doing – helping new members launch into their Wycliffe ministries) or a Resource Coordinator (helping those returning to the US after being overseas).  These 50 people serve 2,078 people.  The role is an HR role and think about if you worked for a company and there wasn’t an HR department to orient you, help you understand the structure of the company, help you fill out forms, etc… and my role will extend to helping people prepare for leaving their life as they know it in the USA and live and work abroad – packing, visa’s, emotional support, culture shock, etc…

Please join us in prayer that our partners in ministry * will increase and we’ll be able to begin our new vital roles ASAP.

* people who are committed to prayer and/or send a tax deductible monthly, quarterly or annual donation to Wycliffe to financially support us

100% in 100 Days

Our first 100 days of 2016 were filled to the brim!  As many of you know, we’ve been on an intense journey of trying to reach the goal of 100% of our financial ministry budget during the first 100 days of 2016.  April 9th marked the 100th day.  Unfortunately, we didn’t reach our goal of 100%.  Below outlines the numbers.

January 1, 2016 ministry budget level                    59%
Letters Sent (requesting an appointment or asking for others to join our team)       45 in     addition to the 281 sent with our newsletter
Appointments (met with families and individuals)            34
Speaking Engagements (had the privilege to share to a large group)    7
New Partners (Hooray!  New financial partners to join our team)        9
Partners to rejoin our team     1
Partners who have increased their partnership support            5
One-time financial gifts                            9
Partners who have left our team                    4
April 9, 2016 ministry budget level                    76%

What now?  Although we are not at 100% doesn’t mean we give up.  We feel we have exhausted our circle of friends, family and acquaintances.  We are seeking friends and family who would like to be advocates on our behalf, presenting us and our ministry with Wycliffe to their friends and family.

Weekend Fun

We had a great weekend of celebration!  Jonah turned 11!  It’s hard to believe he’s 11!  Our oldest nephew turned 16!  How is that possible!?!  One of our friends who we met in Cameroon, was married on Saturday.  We were able to connect with several friends from Cameroon at the wedding.  We had one family from Cameroon stop in to visit us.  David preached at our home church and shared about our ministry with Wycliffe.

Jonah's birthday

Tim & Jessica

Noah's birthday

The Cone's

Unfortunately, DeAnna came down with an upper respiratory infection which dampened some of the excitement.
