The Nativity

Monday evening, December 12th, our church hosted a Jason Gray concert.  David Dunn and Grayson Reed were also on tour with him.  It was a wonderful concert!

The second half of the concert was centered around the Biblical characters who are part of the nativity.  Jason Gray wrote songs based on the characters, part of his inspiration came from a book Beyond Words by Frederick Buechner.  I’ve been thinking about that concert, that book and the characters ever since.

Mary was very courageous, however, I’ve been thinking a lot about Joseph.  He was equally courageous.  He was accepting his fiancée and carrying forth with his betrothal, even though she was pregnant.  He and Mary were blessed with messages from God, however, they were surrounded by others who weren’t.  Others who would’ve been judgmental and condemning, however, Joseph stood by her side and honored his fiancée.

Something Jason Gray shared in the concert was thinking about distractions and busyness.  Most of the time when you ask someone how they are or what they’ve been up to, you’ll get the response that they’re/they’ve been busy.  It’s almost like the other person is pleased to hear that the person is busy.  I’m guilty of being busy and answering that I’m busy, however, being busy is also being occupied, which is having your space be filled (filling capacity).  Just as Jason Gray shared his reflections, I’ve also reflected on am I so busy/occupied and distracted that if I were living when Jesus was born would I hear his newborn cry and recognize who he is?  Would I see the bright star and respond to it or try to hide the shining and be frustrated it awakened me from my slumber?  Would I be excited about the shepherds excitement as they journeyed to see Jesus or would I call out to hush?

Here Kitty, Kitty

I will admit that our cat is spoiled.  She won the cat lottery being able to travel back with us from Cameroon.  She’s a special cat in so many ways.  She has her claws and needs her outside time to have ample scratching time and she’s playful.  She has went through two of her vet tags and collars, somehow she finds a way to remove them outside and we can’t find them.  She normally returns within 20 minutes of being outside unless it’s warm and sunny outside then she’ll sleep on the deck for an extended period.

One day she hadn’t returned within the time she normally does.  I gave it more time and still she hadn’t returned.  I called for her, normally she runs quickly when called, but she didn’t come.  I started to get worried about our furry family member.  I walked around the block calling for her and nothing.  Upon returning to our home, I walked to look between any crevice where she may have became stuck – no Fluffy.  I heard a faint meow and started following the sound.  I looked around and didn’t see her.  Then I looked up and saw her up high in the tree circling around and around the branch, meowing loudly.  The boys came outside and asked if they should call the fire department to come get her out of the tree like in cartoons and movies.  I told them no.  She seemed like she wanted to jump to me.  I climbed a rickety wooden ladder, but it wasn’t tall enough.  Finally, Joshua and I built a wooden ramp propped up by the ladder where she could use it as a ramp to come lower, so I could reach her.

Bibles for Senators

Regardless of your opinion or stance on the new governmental officials who will take office in January; Christ followers are to pray for those in power (1 Timothy 2:2).

I love that the president of Wycliffe (Bob Creson) delivered seven Bibles to Dr. Barry Black, Chaplain of the U.S. Senate, so he can personally present them to each of the seven newly elected senators.

Let’s pray for all the newly elected governmental officials who take office in January that they will allow God’s Word to guide them as they lead our country.

2016

Looking backwards and forwards.  Last year at this time we were gearing up for a very intense partnership development time with the hopes we would be able to continue to serve with Wycliffe in the USA.  2016 has been a year of extreme highs and extreme lows.

David is enjoying continuing supporting Scripture use as a team lead user advocate for android devices volunteering with YouVersion Bible app.  He’s also growing in his role at Intellifarms.

DeAnna is enjoying connecting and building relationships with her clients.  When someone becomes a new Wycliffe missionary, they are assigned a Launch Coordinator (LC).  DeAnna is an LC.  She gets to work with new missionaries helping them prepare for their first term at locations all around the world.  She also continues working with them throughout their first term.  She currently is working with two couples, one family and one single who are very new missionaries, one couple who is preparing to leave for their first assignment in February, one couple who are serving in a remote village in the Pacific, a family who is preparing to serve in Cameroon, a family serving in Papua New Guinea, a family preparing to serve in Papua New Guinea and five families in the pipeline coming her way in various locations.  It’s been fun hearing their journey to Wycliffe and hear their passion.

Thank you for your faithful prayers and financial partnership, which make it possible for us to continue to serve with Wycliffe.

Pile of Leaves

This year we had trees again in our yard, so that means leaves that fall.  It’s easier to mulch them up using a lawnmower, however, the boys wanted to experience jumping in a pile of leaves.  I always get tickled when they request things like this.

We raked the leaves and all of us took turns jumping in the leaves.  I have to admit, leaves aren’t as soft of a landing as I remember.  The last time we were able to have leaf pile fun was in 2004.

Front Door

I’ve blogged many times about a special Christmas decoration that has adorned every home we’ve lived in.  It’s hanging beautifully on our front door this holiday season too.

Celebration

We are so thankful for each of you and for the wonderful holiday of Thanksgiving. We were so blessed to be able to celebrate with family!

Thanksgiving time is also birthday time around our home.  We had a great time celebrating two birthdays during the holiday weekend.

We also were excited to decorate for Christmas.  We decorate for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving.  Before we left the USA in 2009, we used to decorate our home with lots of lights.  David aspired to be Clark Griswold with his exterior illumination.  Last year we were struggling a lot during Christmas time and all we could muster the energy for was to put up the Christmas tree and decorations we hadn’t seen in years.  Last year we shopped the after Christmas sales to purchase lights and decorations.

This year is different.  We are in a better place in so many ways and enjoyed decorating, were energized by decorating.

Pray for Cameroon

We have friends who serve in Buea, Cameroon.  Unfortunately, the majority of things that happen in African countries aren’t reported in most of the western world.  As you know, there has been unrest in the Far North region of Cameroon for years now.

Last week, rioting and violence erupted in the Northwest region of Cameroon.  Our friends in Buea can’t continue running their school right now due to the threats of violence if they do.  The embassy has sent out notifications for American’s not to travel where they currently live.

Cameroon used to be divided and had portions that were under English control and other portions under French control.  When Cameroon became an independent country in 1960, however, with two different countries ruling two different areas and then it becoming one, there are differences in ideas of how things should governed, official language, education, etc…  This tension rose to the top and now people are being hurt, buildings are being burned and threats are being made.

Cameroon for the most part has been a peaceful country, please pray that peace will prevail and all the violence will stop.

Dentist Song

If you’ve followed our blog, you know from time to time, we like to write our own lyrics to popular songs.

This song is based on my dentist appointment earlier this week.  It’s to the tune Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash.  This is a just for fun post.

I hear a train a coming

But that doesn’t make sense

It’s coming from across the room

From a lady’s phone in hand

I’m stuck in the dentist office

And time keeps dragging on

But that train whistle’s blowing

From that annoying smartphone

When I was just a kid

My mama told me, girl

Always cover your cough

No one else wants your germs

But the lady sitting next to me

She wasn’t taught the same things

When I hear that lady coughing

I turn my head and hear that phone ring

I’m finally called back

I sit down in the big chair

She starts to lay it flat

It’s time for my cleaning

But wait, where’s her mask

She’s breathing in my mouth

I want her to mask it up

Is it too much to ask?

I thought this visit couldn’t get worse

Boy I was wrong

When a mom pulled up with two girls

They are the dentist’s daughters

They have free reign of this place

I’m ready to be finished

I’m so ready to be finished

With this appointment and this space

That was my dentist time

It wasn’t like any others

I thought this visit was like

A country tune I’ve heard before

As I’m walking to the door

I hear for the last time

That train whistle’s blowing

And the lady’s coughing more

Thank You, Veterans

I appreciate all our active military and veterans!  They sacrifice life and limp so we can be free in the USA.  I have many friends and family who are active military and veterans.  I want to thank each of you for  your service.

I want to extend a special thanks to my husband on this Veterans Day.  I’m thankful not only for your service to our country, but your leadership in our family.  I’m glad Uncle Sam brought you from Pennsylvania to Missouri.  I’m glad God brought us together!
